Customers have been asking us for a greener solution for book covering for some time. We have heard, listened and now acted on it.
E-Lam is doing all it can to source raw materials from non-fossil fuel manufacturing processes to help address the carbon neutral and sustainability requirements for the future and to be a leader in supplying these products to library and library suppliers internationally.
We have been looking at different options and have done a lot of research and trials and we are delighted to be able to offer our new range of ORGANIC products which is made from Sugarcane fiber- a sustainable , plant based and renewable carbon neutral product.
I’m green™ bio-based plastics are chemically identical to their fossil fuel counterparts. They can be used for the same applications and are 100% RECYCLABLE within existing waste streams for traditional plastics.

The E-Lams ORGANIC range of adhesive book covering products are perfect for application on smooth surfaces of paperback books, comics, flyers, brochures, graphic novels, schoolbooks, cookbooks and gardening books. It is easy to use and to apply due to delayed adhesive reaction which ensures the covers are repositionable upon application without damaging the surface. It is easy to clean and disinfect whilst protecting from dirt, grime, grease, dust and everyday wear and tear. It is a glossy clear film with a water based acidic free adhesive.
The I’m greenTM bio-based products are made from renewable source, the ethanol sugarcane. Replacing fossil fuels with a renewable feedstock significantly contributes to reducing the overall greenhouse gas emissions of the plastics value chain. As the I’m greenTM bio-based products are drop-in, it does not require investment in new plastics-converting machines.
The carbon in the resins is typically not more than a year old, whereas the carbon in conventional fossil plastics typically dates back roughly a hundred million years.
Sugarcane: Agricultural Production, Bioenergy and Ethanol explores this vital source for "green" biofuel from the breeding and care of the plant all the way through to its effective and efficient transformation into bioenergy. Sugar cane is a perennial grass, meaning it doesn't have to be replanted every year, so this also saves energy in that replanting is not required each year like traditional crops.

When fully grown, the sugar cane is harvested. It is then brought to the mills for further treating. The juice of the first pressing is mostly used to produce sugar. The following pressing extracts the residual sugar to produce ethanol. Ethanol is used as biofuel or as the main element for the bio-based plastic (I‘m greenTM plastic). The residual waste fibres (called bagasse) are used to drive the mill, using the heat of the steam for the production of electricity. This procedure makes the sugar cane very inventive. The ashes, together with the waste residue, called vinasse, can then be reused as fertiliser. Vinasse is rich in organic nutrients and water. This organic fertilisation on the sugar cane fields reduces the need for chemical fertilisers and thus contributes to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
The bioethanol is then dehydrated to produce ethylene, which is then polymerised as a plastic resin. This is the plastic that is used for production of E-Lam’s ORGANIC book protection film.
