Ireland’s Public Libraries Are Busier Than Ever — Let’s Keep Their Books in Circulation
Ireland’s public libraries are thriving. According to new figures reported by RTÉ, almost 16 million visits were made to public libraries in 2025 — around two million more than in 2023. Borrowing also rose to more than 22.8 million items.
The figures are a welcome reminder of how much libraries mean to communities. They are places to find a new favourite book, bring a child to storytime, learn a skill or simply spend time with others. RTÉ’s report highlights the range of activity at Enfield Library in Co Meath, from school visits to craft and Irish-language groups.
Books remain at the heart of the library
The way we borrow is changing. The 22.8 million items issued in 2025 include digital resources such as eBooks and audiobooks. RTÉ reports that 12.3 million were physical books and audiovisual items. Those figures show the importance of both formats: digital access broadens choice, while printed books continue to move through libraries and into homes across Ireland.
A library book may pass through many hands during its life. Each loan brings another opportunity to read, learn and enjoy it. Frequent handling can also wear down covers, weaken spine hinges or damage pages. Keeping books in good condition helps librarians make the most of their collections and gives each borrower a better reading experience.
Small steps that support longer book life
